Storyteller Launch 14th July 2011

When you say London 2012, it means something different to everyone.  Whether this is from an athlete who is aiming for that gold medal, to a spectator that is there on the back row having the most amazing time being at one of the biggest global events.  However for 100 people the London 2012 games now means something more.  This people, including myself have become a BT Storyteller, meaning we have the chance to show the UK and the world what is happening in our area.  For the 15 of us lucky 100 people who made the trip to the launch event, the reality of becoming a BT Storyteller became real.

Making the journey from Loughborough to London at 8am should have been that of excitment, however it was a last chance to catch some much need sleep after landing at East Midlands airport at 4am the same day.  However arriving at St Pancras and seeing the BT and London 2012 signs meant that the excitment and adrenalin began to build.

The morning was spent meeting the other lucky 14 storytellers who had made the trip from throughout the country, as well as taking part in many different media interviews or photoshoots.  Whether discussing the ideas of what the future held heading towards 2012, or explaining what we wanted to do, the morning was spent realising that the adventure as a BT storyteller had just begun.

One of the key highlights of the morning was meeting the legend that is Daley Thompson.  As an athletics fan meeting someone that had been so successful within the sport is just a dream come true.  From a far he looks like a powerful athlete, but getting to spent some time with him you can see he is so much more, and is wanting to help so many people with the legacy of 2012.

However the highlight of the morning was still to come.  After having an amazing lunch in the champagne bar in St Pancras, while waiting through the delays it was time.  Time to meet the main man himself!  Lord Seb Coe!  The man who brought the olympics to London.

The Lucky Moment then happened.  Another photoshoot was set up including the 15 storytellers, Daley and of course Lord Coe.  I was very lucky indeed that when we were placed in positions I was stood between the 2 legends. Result! Something like that never happens to me, but it did!  I was on cloud 9!  Like a hyperactive child!  I was also one of the lucky ones to have an individual photo with Lord Coe too.

As Lord Coe rushed off on his taxi bike, we had to chance to travel on the new Javelin Train, which gets you from St Pancras to Stratford in just under 6 minutes.  You have to remember here that this same journey used to take 40minutes on a good day.  Making the rest of the journey, the excitement built as the first views of olympic stadium could be seen.  This is the stadium that so many of us hoped to recieve tickets to watch an event in, somewhere i never thought I would enter, and here I was making the journey for this to happen.

Receiving the media pass to enter the Olympic park, meant that the dream was about to come true.  Who thought this girl from Grimsby, would be about to step foot in the stadium.
The Olymipic Park is a place that is beyond dreams.  Even with a year to go it is almost complete, with a lot of the work that is left to be complete will not happen till just before the games themselves.  Many of the venues have been completely finished, with a design so that many of the seats will be removed to make sustainable venues for the future.  The building that stood out to me was the Basketball venue, as it is completely temporary and may be used in the 2016 games, my idea of sustainable games.  Each of the venues have their own unique feel to them, and the lucky people to have tickets to any of the events will have an amazing time throughout the games.

However the main event of the day was having the chance to enter the stadium itself.  Many of the storytellers at the launch could not get tickets to the athletics, meaning that this would be the only chance to enter the stadium.

Words cannot describe the feeling of being able to stand in the stadium.  The track may not have been layed, but you could just imagine what it was going to be like in a years time.
Before we left the stadium, there was one thing that we had to do.  We were on the 'track', there were plenty of us, so why not have a race? Lining up on the line had an amazing feeling, as we all thought, this time in a year, the likes of Usain Bolt could be in this exact lane, lining up like us.  It was incredible.

Having attended this launch, it makes the whole of London 2012, and the BT Storyteller journey real, and shows how exciting the next year is going to be.

Welcome

Hi, and welcome to my blog.
This blog has been set up to record the next year or so in the build up to 2012 as part of my role as a BT Storyteller. (www.bt.com/storytellers).

A little about myself.
I'm Emma, 22.  About to start my first graduate job down in Loughborough, which will be the base for my 2012 story.
I love sport, and have been a huge fan of the olympics seen 2000 (the first one i have memory of).

I hope you enjoy this blog over the next year, and let me know your thoughts, and what you think i should cover.
